Lisjak 1956 Estate

Our story

The family’s winemaking legacy began many generations ago. After receiving their first wine award in 1956, the fate of the farm was determined. The Lisjak family embarked on a journey towards intensive winegrowing and winemaking, slowly abandoning other agricultural activities and devoting themselves entirely to vines and wines. Today, Domačija Lisjak 1956 remains an extraordinary example of a winery that combines traditional procedures and multigenerational experiences with innovation and state-of-the-art equipment to craft wines of high recognition.

Vineyards and wine varieties

Most of their vineyards, about 75%, extend on marly terraces and about 25% of the vines are sited in the valley. The oldest vineyard was planted 49 years ago. The grape varieties include rebula, malvasia, zelen, pinot blanc, chardonnay, sauvignon, merlot, barbera and cabernet sauvignon. Predominating white varieties are malvasia 15% and pinot blanc 15%, while merlot 15% is most common among red varieties. The family takes great pride in their Malvasia wine, a variety indigenous to the Vipava valley. Each vintage surprises with a slightly different aroma.

Production

The harvest usually takes place in the morning hours, when temperatures are still relatively low. Hand-picked grapes are immediately transported to the cellar, where the grape berries are sorted and destemmed. Certain varieties are then exposed to maceration. Once the grapes are pressed, the maturation process can begin. White varieties are usually aged in stainless steel tanks, whereas red wines mature in various wooden containers.

Visitors are also welcome to participate in the grape harvest. You will join the harvest team, learn about grapes, including how to pick grapes, observe the different stages of winemaking and try typical seasonal delicacies from the local cuisine. Participation is possible only upon prior arrangement.
