Zgonik Farm

Our story

The Zgonik family has been producing wine since 1850. Over the years, the family farm underwent a number of changes. The plan had always been to optimize wine production at all stages, from vineyard to bottle. Consequently, the family’s vineyards were rigorously restructured, along with innovations that were introduced in the wine cellar, such as new technologies and equipment (presses, mills, cooling systems, pumps, etc.) to further improve the wine making process. Transitioning from a free-hanging vine training system and trellising to cane training systems is considered to be one of the biggest changes in winery’s history.

The oldest wine on sale is vintage 2015. Older wines have been moved to the archive section. Among the most valued wines is Cabernet Sauvignon, which in 2013 was awarded the title of champion at Slovenia’s most supreme wine competition in Gornja Radgona.

Zgonik Farm wines can be purchased directly at the family’s estate. Delivery is also possible.

In addition, local bars and restaurants offer a wide selection of Zgonik wines.

Vineyards and wine varieties

The grape varieties present in the family’s vineyards are about evenly represented. The oldest one has been producing grapes for over 35 years. Welschriesling (laški rizling), malvasia and sauvignon, the latter being most frequent among white varieties (30%), are planted in the valley. Vineyards with marly soil are best suited for rebula, malvasia, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The varietal range also includes chardonnay as well as green and yellow muscat.

Production

The harvest season lasts from late August to early October. Picking usually begins early in the morning, since the grapes have to be kept as cold as possible. Relatives, friends and family members help with the harvest. Visitors can also take part upon prior arrangement. The ‘hard work’ is typically over around noon. Afterwards, all of the helpers can enjoy a well-earned lunch. Vinification starts in the afternoon. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in RF tanks. Fresh aromatic varieties are matured in RF tanks, whereas red and white macerated wines are aged in barrique barrels.

Tastings

Wine tastings are held in the evening. Exceptions are possible by prior arrangement. The duration depends on the number of samples and other personal preferences and wishes. It is also possible to accompany the tasting with mixed cold cuts.
