The house of Alexandrian women

The House in the Square (Hiša na Placu) in Prvačina is a museum to the life stories of Alexandrian Women or »Aleksandrinke«. They were women and girls from Gorizia who went to work in Egypt, mostly Alexandria, in the 19th and 20th century. The reasons for this migration were of an economic nature. The women were employed as nannies, wet nurses, housekeepers, cooks, chambermaids, seamstresses, governesses and chaperones. Their earnings were sent home as the survival of their families depended on it.

The House in the Square is located in the village center, near the St. Andrew’s parish church. The museum is operated by the Society for the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of the Alexandrian Women. Visits are possible only by prior appointment.
